project: Profile
location: Sauk City, Wis. - Replacement of the Bridge over the Wisconsin River is part of Wis-DOT’s US 12 Reconstruction Project. The bridge was rehabilitated and expanded to accommodate the increasing amount of commuter traffic along US 12.

During the first phase of the project, a new, two-lane structure was built. Six new river piers and two abutments were constructed, three new lines of steel girders were installed on the substructure and a 9-inch concrete deck was poured. When the new structure was completed, traffic was switched to the new deck and the existing deck was removed. Then, a hinge on the existing steel girders was replaced and a new concrete deck was poured. EKS connected the rehabilitated deck to the completed new deck and constructed three retaining walls with form liner, near the west end of the structure.

Work on the project was restricted by several dates when no work could be performed due to the nesting and spawning of fish and birds species.

The entire substructure and the structural steel erection were completed in November 2002, putting the project ahead of schedule. The completed bridge was opened to traffic November 2003.
